-Still no job update. I'm staring at my phone most hours of the day though - willing it to ring. The ironic part is that the building is the one next to my current one. So during my lunch walks, I stare - longingly.
-No students are here this week and it is glorious. No fighting for parking, no walking through clouds of smoke, slipping on their club flyers on the stairs...just peacefulness.
-I went to sign up for my spring grad class yesterday and saw a literature class that looked interesting. Until I saw about 10 books on the textbook list. Looking at the post below, it would seem as if I like to read, but not that much and not about American Indian literature. Fingers crossed that I can get into the History of the English Language class with 1 textbook.
-I think Teen Mom has scared me out of pregnancy. And I'm 27.
-I'm going to be an aunt. Billy's oldest, younger sister is pregnant.
-Did you know Mario Lopez has a reality show on VH1? Now he has a latin accent sometimes. Annoying. But the show is amusing.
-I'm still living off the food my parents brought for Christmas. They can buy everything so much cheaper at the commissary. Damn you, Publix.
-Today is my BFF's birthday. She is a psychologist and yesterday I got some impromptu therapy on gchat. Talk about friends with benefits.
-Patton chewed off the heel of my 3rd pair of sneakers. Who should be punished for being so dumb? Me or him?

2010 was sort of bumpy - a lot of uncertainty and that is sort of where we still are. But nothing so catastrophic that we couldn't handle. I am thankful for a super supportive family. I did get a new job in 2010 - a much less stressful job that didn't follow me in home on my blackberry. So for the 2nd half of the year, I had a lot of time to read.
My first reading challenge was finishing I Am Charlotte Simmons. Can you believe I had been reading it since 2005? That is how busy life got, I guess.

Next up was American Wife, which is loosely based on the life of Laura Bush. It was definetly intruiging. I've always had an interest in the Bush family. Jenna's husband actually lives in my apartment complex while they were engaged. We were both graduate students at UVA at the time. I never spotted either of them though. Sigh. I so wonder, though, how much of the book is true. Laura was portrayed as an independent thinker and strong woman and wife. I do believe that much is true.

The Help came next. Another thick book, but a quicker read that I thought it would be. After I read it, I started to notice the buzz about the book. It was poignant about life in the south and house help, but entertaining as well. They are making it into a movie, from what I hear.

Such A Pretty Fat by Jen Lancaster was hilarious. I have read a few of her books and plan to read a few more. This one was about her weight loss attempts and the effects of ambien. :)

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult was something I normally wouldn't read, but it was passed along by my MIL. A high school boy was bullied his whole life and in 19 minutes, went on a shooting rampage. It chronicles the effect he had on others and has a suprising twist at the end.

The Summons was left in our house by the previous owners. An attempt to avoid whatever home builder show Billy was watching led me to this book. What I liked about it was that much of it was based in Charlottesville, VA. Grisham is a UVA grad, so those details were neat for me. This is more of a "boy" book, but is was suspenseful and really kept my attention.

Next up: Sarah Palin. I know there are a lot of haters, but in this book, I learned that she did a lot for the state of Alaska. There was a lot of her personal, family story as well and you got an inside look to what the VP race was like from her perspective. The RNC kept her on a tight leash, from what it seems and she's carrying a lot of hate for Katie Couric. I could hear her voice throughout the whole book, and yes, I watch her TLC show.

Lastly, there is Emily Giffin, which I learned is her pen name. I have read several of her books, and honestly the titles and story lines sort of blend together. Everything about them fits the chic-lit genre, but there is nothing wrong with that! I have been hearing about this book since the summer and I know a lot of people were unsettled with the story line. But seriously. I could not put it down. I read it in just over 24 hours. They are also making a movie out of it.

For me - that is a lot of reading for 1 year! Non-academic reading, that is. And I did not purchase one book. Most were from my local library! After moving around so much, I know they weight of books, and to me, I don't want to lug them around and I am not one to re-read books. So there you have it. Any suggestions for 2011?

So when he was doing some last minute Christmas shopping, my dad tagged along. And that goodness he did! Dad reported that B would have just handed over his wallet. I received a Citizen watch on Christmas morning and SJP Lovely perfume. After some internet research, he didn't get the best deal on the perfume, but he couldn't beat the price on the watch! Well done. Honestly, I was expecting and would have been fine with an Ann Klein/Fossil type watch, but am so happy to have a nice piece now! Hopefully I'll get this super awesome better job in January so it can match my more professional persona!
Speaking of deals...I was watching a show on TLC last night about people who use coupons on everything - and even collect coupons from neighbors miles away and dumpster dive for Sunday circulars. I thought they were crazy - until I saw their grocery bill go down from nearly a thousand dollars to around $20. Then they show you the inside of these people's homes and they have what is basically a bomb shelter filled with food and supplies that they have stocked up on. I wonder how they use everything before it's expiration date. I mean, one lady bought 40 cans of pasta sauce. I think she got them all for free. I'm all for a good bargain, but I think this is over the top and boderline obsessive. I would like to think that if I was well trained enough to shop like this, then I would donate a large portion to the soup kitchen. Better yet, why isn't someone at the soup kitchen paying this lady to stock their shelves?!?!

So we had a wonderful Christmas. Our families were so generous and we feel so thankful for everything. We headed down to Miami on the 23rd to spend some time with Billy's family. We had brunch and then exchanged gifts. Later that evening, my parents arrived and we went out for some BBQ. I would have cooked, but I assumed my mom had something because she told me to not worry about buying groceries for the week. Minor communication error.
The next day was Christmas Eve and we played Wii, hung out outside and went for a walk in the park. Hello – who knew that Wii would make my arm sore for the next 2 days!?!? We also went to the Christmas Eve service at our church and it was beautiful. I was happy to show my parents our church and I know that they are happy that we are connected to such a great place. Below is a picture of us before we left. My sweater is a gift from my MIL from WH/BM – one of my favs!

The next morning, we had our "Christmas Morning Breakfast" which is an egg & sausage casserole. Delish! We open gifts – which was so much fun! We felt like kids because it seemed that the presents never ended. After presents, we skyped with my brother, who is in Kuwait. It was so neat to be able to talk to him in real time!
My parents left today, and my MIL & B's grandmother came up. We poked around a few stores and had dinner.
And now the house is finally quiet!!!

I also got a bit crafty on Saturday and made this. Not sure was I'm going to do with it yet, but I think I'd like to find a way to hang it somewhere in the house.

So happy for a 3 day week! On Thursday we'll go down to Miami for the day and then my parents will arrive in Boynton Beach in the early evening. Mom said to not worry about grocery shopping, which means it will be food from home all week. Woot!! Very excited for the break until January 3rd and CHRISTMAS!!!
